MARY: First Class Danny

I take Danny, an 82 yo retired marine who stopped driving, to the Catholic church every week. I figure this is my nod toward religion and I really enjoy the music. They have a band on Sunday evenings and it’s “rockin.” Plus Danny is one of those great guys who everyone loves.




On the way to and from church Danny and I talk about all kinds of things. He has a girlfriend, hobbies, and a lot of friends.

Although he’s not wealthy, every week he throws many dollars in the collection plate. Last week on the drive home, I asked him why he does that. (He’s a very open guy and doesn't mind questions like this.)

He looked at me then smiled. “I’m 80 (he sometimes forgets how young he is) and in all my years, I haven’t seen an armored car following a hearse, have you?”

Now that question will stop anyone for a moment. I mean, what do you say to that? It's true.

Danny also tells me, “If you don’t go first class, your kids will.”
